How Long Does an Asphalt Roof Last in Arkansas?

If your shingles were sold as a "25-year" or "30-year" roof, does that mean you should expect them to last exactly that long?

Not necessarily—especially in Arkansas.

Our combination of intense summer heat, direct sunlight, storms, humidity, and other environmental factors can be tough on asphalt shingles. The quality and type of shingle installed also make a significant difference.

In the video above, Jason from Roelke Roofing explains the lifespan we commonly see from asphalt roofs here in Arkansas.

How Long Does a 3-Tab Roof Last in Arkansas?

Traditional 3-tab shingles were commonly marketed with ratings around 20 to 25 years.

In our experience inspecting roofs throughout Arkansas, however, it's common for a 3-tab roof to be significantly worn by around the 18-year mark.

That doesn't mean every 3-tab roof automatically needs replacement at 18 years. Installation quality, ventilation, tree coverage, storm history, and maintenance can all affect its condition.

But once a roof reaches that age, it's worth paying closer attention to what the shingles are telling you.

What About Architectural Shingles?

Architectural shingles generally provide a longer service life than traditional 3-tab shingles.

A quality architectural asphalt roof can often remain serviceable into its mid-20s in our Arkansas environment. As it ages, however, you may begin seeing deterioration such as significant granule loss and other signs that the shingles are reaching the end of their useful life.

Again, there's no magic birthday when a roof suddenly becomes "bad."

That's why we prefer evaluating the actual roof rather than recommending replacement based solely on its age.

Signs Your Asphalt Roof May Be Wearing Out

If your roof is getting older, there are several things worth watching for:

  • Excessive granules collecting in gutters or downspouts
  • Bald or deteriorating areas on shingles
  • Cracked, curling, loose, or missing shingles
  • Recurring leaks or previous repairs
  • Visible storm damage
  • Problems caused by inadequate roof or attic ventilation

Age gives us context, but the condition of the roofing system tells us much more.

Does an Older Roof Automatically Need to Be Replaced?

No.

If your roof is approaching the typical lifespan for its shingle type, the best next step is usually to have someone evaluate its actual condition.

At Roelke Roofing, we're interested in helping homeowners understand what they have and what their options are. If a repair makes sense, we'll tell you. If the roof is reaching the end of its useful life, we'll explain what we're seeing and why.
